A Q&A With My Snarky Husband

I've seen a lot of bloggers posting random interviews with their husbands lately, and I thought it sounded like a fun idea! I typed out a list of 20 questions to ask Lieutenant Lovemuffin, and he (semi-happily) obliged. I think he likes being talked about on this little blog, so I shouldn't be surprised. He was feeling a bit snarky when answering some of these, though, so there's your fair warning.

1.    What is the name of my blog?
a.   www.comeflywithusblog.com … I purchased the domain name…
(That's true. He controls the technical aspect of this space!)

2.   What do I typically write about?
a.   Stuff we do together and what life is like as an Air Force wife (grueling, I hear…)

3.   What is the best store for women to shop?
a.   Any auto parts store, that way they won’t spend too much money.

4.   Do you know what Pinterest is?
a.   I know it gets me great dinners and also some interesting “cobblers”!
(haha... more on that 'cobbler' in another post... maybe)

5.   What do I keep in my purse?
a.   It’s more of a question of where you keep your purse – apparently it’s my job to always know the answer to that question.

6.   What is my biggest fear?
a.   Fish, tied with flying, so I suppose that’d be a flying fish (sturgeon?)

7.   What jewelry was I wearing on our wedding day?
a.   You had the lockets of your dad on your shoes, the necklace I gave you, your engagement ring, and that thingy in your hair.
(Wow... he's pretty good! I'll let the lack of wedding band slide since I didn't specify if I meant before or after we said our vows)

8.   What did we do for our second (dating) anniversary?
a.   It was valentines day at the Prep School so we went to a Miramont Castle and had a nice dinner.
(Nope. We did that for our first anniversary. He took me on a winter wonderland train ride for our second anniversary, which was amaaazing!)

9.   Which one of us has a better memory?
a.   You do (when not pregnant)

10. Who is the messiest in our house?
a.   Gilligan (she was expecting one of us, but this cat seems to puke wherever he pleases, and if he isn’t happy, he pees on whatever he wants…)

11. If I could meet any famous person, living or dead, who would I want to meet and why?
a.   I feel like you’ve told me this before - probably an author/writer – Jodi Picoult (de gallo)
(Yes, he calls her Jodi Pico de Gallo...)

12.How much do I spend on make-up products?
a.   Not very much – you don’t need much because you’re so beautiful!

13.What is my favorite TV show?
a.   I Love Lucy; that’s easy

14.What about my favorite movie?
a.   Remember the Titans

15.Who is the spender, and who is the saver?
a.   I think we’re both spenders and savers (after I taught you to save via Groupon and other coupons/discounts)

16.Who takes longer to get ready in the mornings?
a.   Depends, are you counting the time it takes me to get out of bed? If so, then me.

17.What is an acceptable amount of money to spend on a dress?
a.   It depends on the type of dress, I don’t wanna be boxed into a corner on this one! I would say no more than $100 with the exception of wedding dresses.

18.What is your favorite part of being married to me?
a.   We always manage to have fun wherever we go!
(I love this answer!)

19. What about the worst part?
a.   Well, I didn’t really see all the hospital visits coming so soon when I said in sickness and in health.
(Sorry, babe... the kidney stones suck, trust me)

20. What was your first thought when you found out you were having a daughter?
a. Cool, I get to teach a girl how to do all these manly things.

Some of his answers made me chuckle!

Have you ever interviewed your significant other? It's fun!

The Guy Behind My Blog - Round 3

Today, I'm joining Betsy for the monthly Guys Behind the Blogs link-up, and I'm so excited to have my handsome husband back on the blog!

Excuse his disgusting facial hair... this is from our honeymoon, when he had 60 days of leave... and yes, that's how it actually grows, haha!

Here are this month's questions... Dan's answers will be in green, and my responses will be underneath if I feel like explaining something...

1) Do you have a good luck charm or ritual?

No, not really, not much of a believer in lucky charms. I do carry a pocket watch on important occasions (graduation, wedding) that I got from my father when I found it as a graduation present in January 2014 while he was in the hospital before he passed away.

He had a funnier answer but declined to share it on here. Probably for the best.

2) What is your favorite dish that your wife makes for you? Do you have any fun memories of when she tried to cook and it totally flopped, or does she get it right every time?
Honestly, Janelle is far more critical of her cooking than I am. I can think of a few dishes she's made that she wouldn't eat that I didn't find amazing but still palatable. This may have to do with me eating Mitchell Hall Food every day for 4 years, but I can pretty much eat anything. The only thing I ever remember not being able to eat is some frozen vegetarian meatballs.  My favorite dish(es) of hers would be all the sides she makes during Thanksgiving

That's also true. I sometimes will only eat a few bites of meals I make because they just don't seem appetizing to me after cooking them... and I'll be embarrassed about it until he chows it down. Thanks for the boost of confidence, husband! Also, the Thanksgiving side dish recipes are totally my favorites too, and sometimes, I sneak them in on other days throughout the year. ;-)

3) What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I think a better question is what didn't I want to be when growing up - I remember telling my parents I had a plan for life that included something along the lines of military, police officer, farmer, and truck driver. There's probably a few other desired careers that I'm missing but I think I just wanted to do things that those I looked up to did.

He also wanted to be a chef. I have seen a photo of him as a kid in the cutest little chef hat! But he decided against it when he realized he be Chef Cook... ha!

4) Which of the five senses is your strongest?
Well, not hearing (I might have selective hearing... ask Janelle), taste (see #2), sight (I'm 20/250), smell (at least I can tolerate various smells quite well), so that leaves touch - this makes sense because it's important in flying and I am a very touchy person.

... and sight and hearing aren't important in flying?!?! Haha, just joking. He passes all of his tests with flying colors. I agree with his answers here. I'm his bloodhound for sure - even when not pregnant! My sense of smell is so strong that it's AWFUL.

5) Would you ever run for president?
I would like to be in office of some sort but don't think I'd like the stress and publicity of the presidency. I think I would be able to make a positive impact in state or local government.

Again, I agree with his answer... except how amazing would it be to be the First Lady?! #FLOTUS

---

Well, that was fun! I hope you enjoyed reading my silly husband's answers as much as I did. I can't wait to bring Dan back at the end of April for Round 4!

Ask Me Anything - The ANSWERS

A couple weeks ago, I made a post where my readers could ask me anything! And you guys did not disappoint - I have several great questions to answer today that I have broken up into five categories: running, baby, personal, military, and random.

I had awesome questions come in from lots of people: Diana, Jen, Kylie, Bailey, Ashley, Amber, Caitlyn, and Rachel. Check out their blogs - they're pretty cool!

1. What advice would you give to a new runner? Don't give up! Seriously... that's the best advice I've ever gotten about running, and I've been at it for well over half my life. Running is a sport where you compete against yourself. It can make you feel good or feel defeated... not every run is a good one, but there is something good in every run - even if it's learning to listen to your body or not be so hard on yourself. Adding distance to your routine takes time... it doesn't happen overnight. Don't push yourself too hard too fast, or you'll get hurt. Instead, increase your mileage gradually, and I promise, your heart will fall in love with running. I like to run because it gives me time to be alone with my thoughts. When I was marathon training last year, I started out dreading my long runs because I had no one to run with. But I grew to love them and even look forward to them because of how I felt during and after my run.

2. How do you get to the point where you like running? For me, this did take some time. I first joined cross country more for the social aspect of it - some of my friends were running, and I wanted to hang out with them. I could run three miles when I started because I always played sports and ran by myself to maintain my fitness, but I wasn't fast, and I certainly couldn't run farther than that. Over time, I saw my body become stronger and, more importantly, my mind became stronger too. I learned how to push myself through rough situations in both running and in life, and I feel like I really grew from that experience. All I can say is keep at it - and if you make the commitment, the results will have you enjoying it.

1. What names are you considering for your bun in the oven? Ah, this question is great, and we have actually gotten it a lot from friends and family already. We won't be sharing the name of our baby until his or her birth day, but just know that we have agreed on a girl's name already, and it's a more classic/traditional name. A boy's name, though? We have no idea. There are a couple on the table that we both LIKE but don't love... so we're not quite there yet. I think we'll put more energy into thinking of a boy's name if we find out we're having a boy... and if not, we already have our girl's name ready!

1. What made you want to move to Colorado while Dan was at the Academy? Simple answer: Dan. More complicated answer: I was scared of long distance. We did one year of it, and it was not fun. And if I didn't move, we would face four more years of it. That didn't sound like fun to either of us. He was very supportive of my decision to move, but he let me make it on my own. He never pressured me to move out there for him, and I will forever thank him for that. It also just made sense because I was beginning my teaching career, and the job market in Missouri for teachers was in shambles in 2010. It helped knowing that I would have more opportunities in Colorado.

2. Was it a tough decision? Not at all. I think the timing was right since I was graduating. It would have been a much tougher decision if I were beginning or in the middle of school, but it felt like a completely logical decision to make. And moving there was the best decision I ever made!

3. Do you plan on going back to teaching when you and Dan move to your next station, or will your blog and Etsy shop be your job? I hope to return to teaching SOME DAY. As for our next duty station, no. I probably will not even look for a job because Dan will have crazy hours, and we'll have a 7 month old - one and a half year old baby at the time. I do plan to continue blogging regularly and keep up with my Etsy shop as best as I can.

4. Was it hard not having some loved ones at your wedding since it was out of town? We didn't have too much of a problem with this because we planned our wedding so far in advance. Family members know exactly when and where it was going to be for two years ahead of time, so they had ample time to prepare and make appropriate accommodations. The only person who couldn't make it was Dan's mom, and while that was very upsetting, it was due to her health and not necessarily our wedding being in Colorado... because it wouldn't have been in the state where she lived anyway, had it been "at home".

5. What made it easier to “be away” from Dan while he was at the Academy? Being away from the person you love is never easy, and I was fortunate to get to see him nearly every weekend throughout those four years and sometimes on one weeknight too. That said, he did compete on the flying team, so when he was out of town for competitions or training, it made it easier to become comfortable with alone time. I have always enjoyed my own company, but I didn't truly LEARN that about myself until I was put to the test. If he had training on a Friday night, and friends were busy? No biggie - I'd head to the store or my favorite restaurant after work and hitting the gym, and I'd get whatever food I wanted for that evening and a bottle of wine. I would watch Netflix or read a book all evening. I thoroughly enjoyed those evenings, as they helped me to unwind from crazy weeks working with middle schoolers.

6. Are you going to stay home with Cookie or start teaching again? I already touched on this, but I will definitely be staying home with Cookie until he or she starts school. Then, I may go back to teaching. We'll see!

7. What is your best memory from your childhood? Ahh, this question is tough! I have so many great memories from childhood... and most of them revolve around acrobats. I can't pick any specific moment, but I started tumbling when I was really young and kept going until middle school (when I got hurt and was too scared to go back... the only real regret I have in life). I had an amazing coach and so many great friends there... and I just absolutely LOVED it. I loved competing close to home so my extended family could come watch, but I also loved traveling for meets and competitions. I hope I'm able to put my kid(s) in some kind of tumbling, whether full gymnastics or not.

8. How many kids do you eventually want? We both want two kids. Ideally, we would have a girl and a boy, but we know we can't plan that. We may choose to adopt our second child. It's something we discuss a lot, but we are not set in stone with that by any means.

9. Tell me about your spiritual journey and getting baptized as an adult. Great question! I talk a little about it in this post, but I'll expand a little bit here. I didn't grow up in a family that went to church, but I went reluctantly with friends several times, always hating it and feeling judged. One day, it just hit me, and I read the entire Bible (okay, so that took me a year). Then, I was feeling really inspired, so I started going to church regularly with Dan, and then we did a Bible study with his sponsor parents, which really fueled my fire. I ended up getting Baptized at our church in Colorado Springs (Sunrise Methodist Church), and it was a wonderful experience. We now attend Ginghamsburg Church (which is much larger) in Tipp City, Ohio, and attending regularly, taking a class, and working each week with the 7th and 8th graders in the youth group have definitely helped me grow even more in my faith.

1. When Dan starts pilot training, what will his days be like? Dan starts pilot training next year (sometime after April 15th), and his days will be busy. He will have a first phase of academics, which won't be as long, but he'll have a lot of studying to do at home. Hopefully, he'll be a little ahead of the game since he has flown for so long already, but a lot of the civilian and military flying are not the same, so he'll have a lot to learn. Once he starts flying, he can have 12 hour days or even longer. It's definitely going to be a test for us, and it'll be much busier than graduate school, but he is looking forward to getting back into the pilot community, and so am I for a better sense of community!

2. How do you plan on dealing with deployments? This is something I've thought about often and have been bracing myself for. I know that Dan isn't deployable now, and he won't be until he is finished with pilot training and trained in his aircraft... but it's something that's always on military spouses' minds. I try to make friends wherever we are, so hopefully I'll know some other spouses who have deployed husbands at the same time, so we can tackle it together. My family also lives in the smack dab middle of the USA, so it's easy to visit them, so long as we're stationed in the USA. I also have heard of making "deployment bucket lists", which I think is an awesome idea. The idea is to make a list of things you want to accomplish for yourself while your husband is gone. Not only will that make the time go by quicker (I tried it when he was TDY or in training while at the Academy), but it will also give you a sense of purpose.

3. Does Dan’s grad school lengthen his commitment, or does it count toward it? Dan's grad school does not count toward his ten year commitment in the Air Force since that begins after completion of pilot training, which he has not done yet. He was prior enlisted before going to the Academy and commissioning, though, so he already has a few years under his belt anyway. He plans on going 20 years so he can retire, though, so we'll see what happens.

4. What are some places you guys hope to be stationed? We would love to be stationed in Colorado Springs (surprise, surprise), but unfortunately, no active duty aircraft fly out of there, so it's highly unlikely. We would also both love to go to Alaska... and Dan really wants to be stationed overseas. I think I could handle England, but I'm super hesitant about any of the other countries. I know it's not my decision (or his entirely either), so if it happens, I will go with the flow and embrace it... but I'm definitely more a fan of staying stateside.

5. How do you feel about your future children being in the military or being a military spouse? This is a good question and something I've actually thought about! Dan and I joke that our kids are going to go to one of the Academies so we don't have to pay for their college. We won't force them, but if they do, they'll get some of the money we had saved for their college. I'm not super comfortable with the idea, obviously, as I've been on the other side, but ultimately, we will support whatever path our kids choose to take, whether it means they are in the military or not. As for being a military spouse, I hope that they will see it as a positive thing and embrace it if they fall in love with a man or woman in the military. Growing up, they'll also see the tough parts, though, so they will at least be able to make an informed decision.

1. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? This question is easy for me right now: Colorado Springs, Colorado! I love that city and spent an amazing four years there. I would love to go back and live there again, and as of now, we plan to move back there after Dan retires. We haven't been everywhere, though, so that may change... but I doubt it!

2. What is your favorite dessert to make? Great question! I LOVE making desserts, as I'm sure you're aware. My two favorites, though, are probably my Oatmeal Pumpkin Cream Pies and my Cookie Candy Brownies... I can't pick just one!

3. What’s your favorite (easy) meal to make? I love easy meals! This one does require some prep work beforehand, like chopping an onion and grating a block of cheese, but for the most part, everything kind of just cooks itself after that. The recipe I will always go-to when I want a "favorite" is my Broccoli Cheese Soup (and it's full of other veggies too and tastes even better than Panera's... in my opinion).

The Guy Behind My Blog - Round 2

Today, I'm joining Betsy for the monthly Guys Behind the Blogs link-up, and I'm so excited to have my handsome husband back on the blog!

Here are this month's questions... Dan's answers will be in green, and my responses will be underneath if I feel like explaining something...

1) If you could write a book, what topic would you write about and why?

Airplanes because they are fascinating and the pinnacle of mankind's ingenuity.

I could have seen this answer coming from a mile away.

2) What is one thing on your bucket list or one thing you want to accomplish in life?
Hmmm... I would like to travel to all seven continents.

I'm glad he said this. It's also a goal of mine, and he's my favorite travel partner!

3) If you could look out your window and only see one view for the rest of your life, what would you want to see?
A large amount of property that is all mine... preferably somewhere in the Rockies.

Again, we agree. I'd also add a stunning view of Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak into my view, but we can settle on that later.

4) Imagine you're opening a shop. What are you selling?
A place where people can get all of the knowledge and equipment to do things themselves. Basically a DIY sop. For example, BBQ and smoking meats, home brewing, and other hobbies.

And he said he'd be "so mad" if someone else rips off his idea since I published this on my blog...

5) If you could have 50 pounds of anything other than money, would what it be?
Gold... it's an element, not money. ;-)

Sometimes, he is a big smart-ass.

6) Time to brag on your girl... tell us one thing that makes you proud of your wife.
I am really proud of her passion for helping others and how she always try to do a job well... for instance, her teaching and her work with the church youth group.

Aww... way to make me blush!

---

Well, that was fun! I hope you enjoyed reading my silly husband's answers as much as I did. I can't wait to bring Dan back at the end of March for Round 3!

Ask Me Anything

I have seen several bloggers doing this over the past few weeks, and I thought it would be fun.

This is your opportunity to get to know me a little better. Ask me anything you want - and I will post answers sometime next week. I won't be making a vlog, though... I hate how my voice sounds when it's recorded.

Simply leave your questions in the comment section here, e-mail me, or message me on my Facebook page.

PLEASE ask questions, though. If I only have a couple to answer, it's going to be really weird making an entire post out of that... so do you want to know about my marriage with Dan? Our time together when he was at the Academy? Baby Cookie? The marathon I ran last year? Teaching? My Etsy shop? Recipes / meal planning? Seriously - ask me whatever you want!

What do YOU want to know?

The Guy Behind My Blog - Round 1

Today, I've decided to link-up (a few days late!) with Betsy for the Guy Behind My Blog! Thanks so much to Elizabeth for participating in this... I've been wanting to do this since I saw one going around last year, but life was hectic with Dan still at the Academy... but now that we live together, this is much, much easier, and I'm excited to participate!

And because I love him (and because you need a visual before reading is answers), here are some of my most treasured photos of my handsome husband ever.

This month's questions are fun! Dan's answers will be in green, and my responses will be underneath if I feel like explaining something...

1) Have you ever had a blog, or have you ever considered starting one?

Yes, I had one for a while to talk about my flying. Also, I had a mandatory journal blog when I went to China for a month. Nothing ever really stuck because I'm not as dedicated as my wife / nobody really cares what I have to say.

It's true. He had forgotten about his flying one, and I found it one day when we were dating and asked him about it. He was embarrassed, but I don't know why.

2) If you could be a member of any band, which one would it be?
Umm... my own band. Or the Glenn Miller Band in World War II.

Dan plays the trumpet and was in band forever and ever. He even played in the Army Band when he first enlisted (and before he transferred to the Air Force). He played TAPs at many, many military funerals as well.

3) Valentine’s Day is on the horizon… are you the date-planner type, or do you fly by the seat of your pants? Do you have anything planned for February 14th this year?
This is a tricky question because it's a little bit of both. It depends on what kind of Groupons I find. No, I don't have anything planned for this year, but Janelle told me what we're going to do this year, so my job was easy.

We've never actually been together for Valentine's Day before because he could never leave the Academy for it... and our dating anniversary is about a week and a half later... so this is a first for us (but our sixth one!) so we're going to Columbus, about an hour away, to have a date day.

4) Tell us about a date-night-gone-wrong for you and your wife.
No, all of our dates go perfectly. Sorry this is boring.

He's kidding, of course. We know there was one where things just kept going wrong, but we can't remember when it was or what we were trying to do. We just know it was annoying.

5) And let’s cover all the topics… sports… who are you rooting for in the Superbowl and why?
I really don't care. I guess the Seahawks because Janelle hates the Patriots, and I need to stay on her good side.

He really isn't a sports guy at all. I drag him to football and baseball games, and he pretends like he loves it so he fits in. But really, I am the athletic one in our house.

---

Well, that was fun! I hope you enjoyed reading my silly husband's answers as much as I did. I can't wait to bring Dan back at the end of February for Round 2!
  • Have you ever participated in a 'guy behind the blog' link-up?
  • Is your husband or significant other involved with your blog?
