A Q&A With My Snarky Husband

I've seen a lot of bloggers posting random interviews with their husbands lately, and I thought it sounded like a fun idea! I typed out a list of 20 questions to ask Lieutenant Lovemuffin, and he (semi-happily) obliged. I think he likes being talked about on this little blog, so I shouldn't be surprised. He was feeling a bit snarky when answering some of these, though, so there's your fair warning.

1.    What is the name of my blog?
a.   www.comeflywithusblog.com … I purchased the domain name…
(That's true. He controls the technical aspect of this space!)

2.   What do I typically write about?
a.   Stuff we do together and what life is like as an Air Force wife (grueling, I hear…)

3.   What is the best store for women to shop?
a.   Any auto parts store, that way they won’t spend too much money.

4.   Do you know what Pinterest is?
a.   I know it gets me great dinners and also some interesting “cobblers”!
(haha... more on that 'cobbler' in another post... maybe)

5.   What do I keep in my purse?
a.   It’s more of a question of where you keep your purse – apparently it’s my job to always know the answer to that question.

6.   What is my biggest fear?
a.   Fish, tied with flying, so I suppose that’d be a flying fish (sturgeon?)

7.   What jewelry was I wearing on our wedding day?
a.   You had the lockets of your dad on your shoes, the necklace I gave you, your engagement ring, and that thingy in your hair.
(Wow... he's pretty good! I'll let the lack of wedding band slide since I didn't specify if I meant before or after we said our vows)

8.   What did we do for our second (dating) anniversary?
a.   It was valentines day at the Prep School so we went to a Miramont Castle and had a nice dinner.
(Nope. We did that for our first anniversary. He took me on a winter wonderland train ride for our second anniversary, which was amaaazing!)

9.   Which one of us has a better memory?
a.   You do (when not pregnant)

10. Who is the messiest in our house?
a.   Gilligan (she was expecting one of us, but this cat seems to puke wherever he pleases, and if he isn’t happy, he pees on whatever he wants…)

11. If I could meet any famous person, living or dead, who would I want to meet and why?
a.   I feel like you’ve told me this before - probably an author/writer – Jodi Picoult (de gallo)
(Yes, he calls her Jodi Pico de Gallo...)

12.How much do I spend on make-up products?
a.   Not very much – you don’t need much because you’re so beautiful!

13.What is my favorite TV show?
a.   I Love Lucy; that’s easy

14.What about my favorite movie?
a.   Remember the Titans

15.Who is the spender, and who is the saver?
a.   I think we’re both spenders and savers (after I taught you to save via Groupon and other coupons/discounts)

16.Who takes longer to get ready in the mornings?
a.   Depends, are you counting the time it takes me to get out of bed? If so, then me.

17.What is an acceptable amount of money to spend on a dress?
a.   It depends on the type of dress, I don’t wanna be boxed into a corner on this one! I would say no more than $100 with the exception of wedding dresses.

18.What is your favorite part of being married to me?
a.   We always manage to have fun wherever we go!
(I love this answer!)

19. What about the worst part?
a.   Well, I didn’t really see all the hospital visits coming so soon when I said in sickness and in health.
(Sorry, babe... the kidney stones suck, trust me)

20. What was your first thought when you found out you were having a daughter?
a. Cool, I get to teach a girl how to do all these manly things.

Some of his answers made me chuckle!

Have you ever interviewed your significant other? It's fun!

A Happier Spin on Fathers' Day

Fathers' Day is always rough for me. Well, it has been for the past nine years anyway. My own dad passed away unexpectedly when I was a senior in high school... way back in 2006. Then, Dan lost his dad last year. It's just not a fun day for us.

This year, however, I decided to make it fun. Since Dan is not quite a father yet (but will be in September!), I decided to spoil him just a little.

I made him a New Dad Survival Kit... I had seen the idea floating around on Pinterest, but I put my own spin on it and added a couple things. I LOVE how it turned out, and he got a good kick out of it. I added four (used - we don't buy new around here) books about dads for him to read to Baby Cookie, and I found a couple of cute outfits to put in there too.

Dan is a pilot, so one of them says "dad is my wingman" - it's a boys' onesie from Old Navy, so I got a matching headband/bow to go with it... and the other days "daddy's little cupcake" - which he's been calling her. I was so glad to put a happier spin on Fathers' Day this year, and I know next year will be even better with a baby!

I already have some ideas brewing for what Baby Cookie can do / make for Dan next year! Can't wait!

The Guy Behind My Blog - Round 3

Today, I'm joining Betsy for the monthly Guys Behind the Blogs link-up, and I'm so excited to have my handsome husband back on the blog!

Excuse his disgusting facial hair... this is from our honeymoon, when he had 60 days of leave... and yes, that's how it actually grows, haha!

Here are this month's questions... Dan's answers will be in green, and my responses will be underneath if I feel like explaining something...

1) Do you have a good luck charm or ritual?

No, not really, not much of a believer in lucky charms. I do carry a pocket watch on important occasions (graduation, wedding) that I got from my father when I found it as a graduation present in January 2014 while he was in the hospital before he passed away.

He had a funnier answer but declined to share it on here. Probably for the best.

2) What is your favorite dish that your wife makes for you? Do you have any fun memories of when she tried to cook and it totally flopped, or does she get it right every time?
Honestly, Janelle is far more critical of her cooking than I am. I can think of a few dishes she's made that she wouldn't eat that I didn't find amazing but still palatable. This may have to do with me eating Mitchell Hall Food every day for 4 years, but I can pretty much eat anything. The only thing I ever remember not being able to eat is some frozen vegetarian meatballs.  My favorite dish(es) of hers would be all the sides she makes during Thanksgiving

That's also true. I sometimes will only eat a few bites of meals I make because they just don't seem appetizing to me after cooking them... and I'll be embarrassed about it until he chows it down. Thanks for the boost of confidence, husband! Also, the Thanksgiving side dish recipes are totally my favorites too, and sometimes, I sneak them in on other days throughout the year. ;-)

3) What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I think a better question is what didn't I want to be when growing up - I remember telling my parents I had a plan for life that included something along the lines of military, police officer, farmer, and truck driver. There's probably a few other desired careers that I'm missing but I think I just wanted to do things that those I looked up to did.

He also wanted to be a chef. I have seen a photo of him as a kid in the cutest little chef hat! But he decided against it when he realized he be Chef Cook... ha!

4) Which of the five senses is your strongest?
Well, not hearing (I might have selective hearing... ask Janelle), taste (see #2), sight (I'm 20/250), smell (at least I can tolerate various smells quite well), so that leaves touch - this makes sense because it's important in flying and I am a very touchy person.

... and sight and hearing aren't important in flying?!?! Haha, just joking. He passes all of his tests with flying colors. I agree with his answers here. I'm his bloodhound for sure - even when not pregnant! My sense of smell is so strong that it's AWFUL.

5) Would you ever run for president?
I would like to be in office of some sort but don't think I'd like the stress and publicity of the presidency. I think I would be able to make a positive impact in state or local government.

Again, I agree with his answer... except how amazing would it be to be the First Lady?! #FLOTUS

Well, that was fun! I hope you enjoyed reading my silly husband's answers as much as I did. I can't wait to bring Dan back at the end of April for Round 4!

The Guy Behind My Blog - Round 2

Today, I'm joining Betsy for the monthly Guys Behind the Blogs link-up, and I'm so excited to have my handsome husband back on the blog!

Here are this month's questions... Dan's answers will be in green, and my responses will be underneath if I feel like explaining something...

1) If you could write a book, what topic would you write about and why?

Airplanes because they are fascinating and the pinnacle of mankind's ingenuity.

I could have seen this answer coming from a mile away.

2) What is one thing on your bucket list or one thing you want to accomplish in life?
Hmmm... I would like to travel to all seven continents.

I'm glad he said this. It's also a goal of mine, and he's my favorite travel partner!

3) If you could look out your window and only see one view for the rest of your life, what would you want to see?
A large amount of property that is all mine... preferably somewhere in the Rockies.

Again, we agree. I'd also add a stunning view of Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak into my view, but we can settle on that later.

4) Imagine you're opening a shop. What are you selling?
A place where people can get all of the knowledge and equipment to do things themselves. Basically a DIY sop. For example, BBQ and smoking meats, home brewing, and other hobbies.

And he said he'd be "so mad" if someone else rips off his idea since I published this on my blog...

5) If you could have 50 pounds of anything other than money, would what it be?
Gold... it's an element, not money. ;-)

Sometimes, he is a big smart-ass.

6) Time to brag on your girl... tell us one thing that makes you proud of your wife.
I am really proud of her passion for helping others and how she always try to do a job well... for instance, her teaching and her work with the church youth group.

Aww... way to make me blush!

Well, that was fun! I hope you enjoyed reading my silly husband's answers as much as I did. I can't wait to bring Dan back at the end of March for Round 3!

Six Years Together

Six years ago tonight, Dan and I went on our first real date.

We had been friends for several months, and we hung out a lot... but our first DATE was on February 25th, 2009. He took me to get hibachi for dinner about 45 minutes away from our college campus, and then we went to a comedy show.

It was a blast, and we never looked back!

I can't believe we've been together for so long. And we're FINALLY MARRIED now! Nothing beats that - it's pretty awesome! AND we're expecting our first baby.

I can already tell this year is going to be an amazing one with such a wonderful man by my side.

How long have you been with your significant other?

How I Shared the News With My Husband

Before I begin, I want to remind you about my "Ask Me Anything" post from last Friday. Please send in more questions! I have several awesome questions already, but I would love to break down the questions and answers into different categories, and I don't think I have enough quite yet... so if you haven't already, please submit your questions for me!

How I Told My Husband that We're Having a Baby

As I shared in this post, I took my first (of soooo many) pregnancy tests on December 30th, 2014. The line was so faint that I didn't even believe it. I went to bed curious but NOT thinking, "Oh, wow, I'm pregnant!"

When I took two more (on December 31st, 2014), and I could still see faint lines, I knew that all three couldn't be wrong. But I went to the store on January 1st, 2015 to buy a digital test anyway, just because that's the kind of person I am. I took it, and the word "pregnant" appeared almost immediately.

I knew at that moment that everything was real. I knew I needed to come up with a plan to tell my husband. I always wanted to tell him in a cute way, so luckily, I had already made a custom onesie that I designed and had it stashed away in a drawer. Convenient, right?

That said, I was TERRIFIED. I didn't know how he was going to react because I had only been off of my birth control for one month. We didn't expect to be pregnant so soon, and I was pretty nervous about telling him.

I did what all nervous people do I always do when I'm nervous about something: I wrote Dan a letter. I thought about being a super big chicken and just leaving the letter on his desk... but I decided I did want to see his face when he read it.

He opened the letter, confused, and skipped straight to the last line... the one that said, "We are going to be parents." He looked at me funny, and then he read the entire letter. I was curious as to how he was going to react, but I had no reason to be anxious. Dan immediately said, "That's cool!" and jumped up and kissed me.

I gave him the adorable onesie I had made, and he loved it. He couldn't wait to show it off, and he wanted to tell everyone right away - but of course I explained why he couldn't just then.

We then watched an episode of the TV show we were in the middle of (Breaking Bad). About half way through the episode, it really sank in for Dan. "Are you sure?" he asked. "Well, I took FOUR tests, and they all say positive," I replied. Silence.

And then he went into overdrive. He has made lists, bought (a ton of) books, gone crazy shopping on Craigslist, accumulating things from friends, and being a master budgeter. He is super excited to be a dad. And I absolutely cannot wait to see him in his new role come September!

Dan has been flying for more than ten years. He competed on the flying team in college, and he heads to Air Force pilot training next spring. This was the PERFECT way to let him know he's going to be a dad!

His first "dad" book!

DIY Open When Letters for Your Spouse

When I was making the 12 Days of Christmas Gifts for my husband, I struggled to think of something for Day 11... which is where these fun "open when" letters came in.

I had seem these floating around Pinterest for quite a while and had wanted to make a set for Dan... but I just didn't have any reason to. What better time for a fun DIY gift than the 12 Days of Christmas?!

Dan and I have been writing handwritten letters to each other for years. Since we lived apart from each other for the first five years of our relationship (and long distance for one of those years), it's just something we do. I have a decorated box of all of the letters and cards I've received from Dan, and he has mine in sheet protectors in a binder. We also wrote each other letters the night before our wedding (we were not together). We sealed them up in the middle of our ceremony in a box with a bottle of wine, and we plan on opening them either on our five year anniversary or when we need to remember all of the emotions and love we were feeling the night before tying the knot!

For this project, I started by creating 11 different labels - or the categories I wanted to write letters for. I tried to make them colors he would like rather than my favorite colors. It was fun to come up with the topics, but my husband did tell me that he'd need about a thousand of the "when I'm being annoying" letters. Oops.

I printed out the labels on cardstock and then glued them to plain white envelopes with a glue stick. Nothing fancy over here...

Inside each envelope, I placed a one page (or longer) letter the corresponds with the topic. I bundled them all together, wrapped them up, and gave them to my husband. He thought it was a really clever gift, and he has them sitting on his desk in his office now so he can open them when the time is right for each one!

The Guy Behind My Blog - Round 1

Today, I've decided to link-up (a few days late!) with Betsy for the Guy Behind My Blog! Thanks so much to Elizabeth for participating in this... I've been wanting to do this since I saw one going around last year, but life was hectic with Dan still at the Academy... but now that we live together, this is much, much easier, and I'm excited to participate!

And because I love him (and because you need a visual before reading is answers), here are some of my most treasured photos of my handsome husband ever.

This month's questions are fun! Dan's answers will be in green, and my responses will be underneath if I feel like explaining something...

1) Have you ever had a blog, or have you ever considered starting one?

Yes, I had one for a while to talk about my flying. Also, I had a mandatory journal blog when I went to China for a month. Nothing ever really stuck because I'm not as dedicated as my wife / nobody really cares what I have to say.

It's true. He had forgotten about his flying one, and I found it one day when we were dating and asked him about it. He was embarrassed, but I don't know why.

2) If you could be a member of any band, which one would it be?
Umm... my own band. Or the Glenn Miller Band in World War II.

Dan plays the trumpet and was in band forever and ever. He even played in the Army Band when he first enlisted (and before he transferred to the Air Force). He played TAPs at many, many military funerals as well.

3) Valentine’s Day is on the horizon… are you the date-planner type, or do you fly by the seat of your pants? Do you have anything planned for February 14th this year?
This is a tricky question because it's a little bit of both. It depends on what kind of Groupons I find. No, I don't have anything planned for this year, but Janelle told me what we're going to do this year, so my job was easy.

We've never actually been together for Valentine's Day before because he could never leave the Academy for it... and our dating anniversary is about a week and a half later... so this is a first for us (but our sixth one!) so we're going to Columbus, about an hour away, to have a date day.

4) Tell us about a date-night-gone-wrong for you and your wife.
No, all of our dates go perfectly. Sorry this is boring.

He's kidding, of course. We know there was one where things just kept going wrong, but we can't remember when it was or what we were trying to do. We just know it was annoying.

5) And let’s cover all the topics… sports… who are you rooting for in the Superbowl and why?
I really don't care. I guess the Seahawks because Janelle hates the Patriots, and I need to stay on her good side.

He really isn't a sports guy at all. I drag him to football and baseball games, and he pretends like he loves it so he fits in. But really, I am the athletic one in our house.

---

Well, that was fun! I hope you enjoyed reading my silly husband's answers as much as I did. I can't wait to bring Dan back at the end of February for Round 2!
