The Hundred Dollar Hamburger

I've mentioned several times on this blog that flying is not my favorite activity in the world. It's terrifying to me. I'm just not a fan of it. My husband, on the other hand, is an aviation enthusiast. He loves the sky. He's been flying for ten years now - longer than he's been able to drive!

When we started dating, he told me that he couldn't date a girl who didn't like flying. I sucked it up and pretended, and he flew me to dinner from Missouri to Kansas for our second date. It was scary, but it was also amazing.

Now, he's heading to pilot training with the Air Force as soon as he gets his Master's degree. While he's still in school, though, he doesn't have much time or money to fly. While at the Air Force Academy, he competed on the flying team, which meant he was flying about five days a week. He misses it here in Ohio, so he got all checked out to fly out of a local airport.

One day in September, he took me up for the ever-famous "hundred dollar hamburger" - which really just means that he flew us to another city for lunch. It's supposed to mean that the hamburger at lunch costs a hundred dollars because of how much you pay to get there... but we actually had Mexican food in West Virginia, and I'm sure it was more than a hundred dollars in flight time and fuel. Either way, it's fun to say that we went for a hundred dollar hamburger.

The flight was bumpy when we got into West Virginia near the mountains. I was scared, but the views were stunning. I took many pictures that day to capture my fear AND the great views we had... enjoy!

  • Do you like flying?
  • Have you ever flown in a small plane?

  1. Very fun! My best friend is also a pilot and when I visit her we fly to the next city over, usually for fresh strawberries. I get motion sick though, so that's not always a good time, but it's still really cool versus flying in a commercial plane.

  2. If you ever feel like eating a hundred dollar barbeque sandwich, come to Owensboro!!! Our airport is so popular with the pilots from Fort Campbell and Fort Knox that a local restaurant sends a van over to pick them up at the airport!

  4. That's awesome! John wanted to get his license to fly small planes like that. It would be awesome to just fly to lunch.

  5. My daddy had his pilot's license until his health took it away from him. Also, when he was younger, him and a couple friends bought a plane together and he would take us up around our city on some Sunday afternoons. Once, he even let me "fly" and I was so proud--and my big sister was so jealous!
I've also gone on a glacier flight seeing tour from Talkeetna, AK, and it was pretty awesome! The views were amazing, we even got to see a forest fire on a glacier. (It blows my mind that a forest can grow on a glacier)

  6. Wow what a cool thing! I do not enjoying flying, it has always scared me pretty bad. Kyle doesn't mind flying but he would rather jump out of the plane. ;)

  8. So much fun! I am also terrified of flying so I gave up some dates at Central with some people because I was too scared to do it.

  10. I am like you, I don't like flying. Nick is always wanting me to go flying with him and I'm scared to. Not that I don't trust him. I mean, if he can fly the T-6 (a mini jet, basically, that has a pressurized cockpit, ejection seats, and pulls 6 Gs daily) and now operates a 35+ million dollar helicopter, I think he can handle a little Piper or Cessna lol. But I just don't like flying! Thankfully, as you said, flying is expensive. And he has no time outside of flying for his job lol. So for now, I get to stay safe on the ground. But I would like to fly at some point with him

  11. Oh my goodness, so fun!!!! We'd never be able to pick a place to eat if we had several states to chose from. We have a hard enough time as it is here in KC! ;)
