Scary Stuff {Blogtember Challenge}

Friday, September 6th Prompt: A story about a time you were very afraid.

So, would you believe me if the scariest story I can think of involves pumpkin pie? No? Well, it does.

This may just be one of those things you'd all be better off not knowing about me... but I'm going to share the story anyway.

Way back in 2009, I was a senior in college. Dan flew to Missouri to spend Thanksgiving with me, and the week we had together was magical. That said, after Thanksgiving dinner with my family, we drove back to my apartment an hour away because we had plans with friends the following day. When we got there, we decided to make a pumpkin pudding pie.

Things were going well. We made it. We ate some. It was DELICIOUS. And then it happened.

Dan said something funny. It must not have been TOO funny because I can't remember what he even said now that I think about it. But at the time, it was HILARIOUS. So hilarious that I actually shot pumpkin pie, crust and all, up my sinuses from laughing so hard while I was chewing a bite of our pie.

The fact that it happened at all is not the scary part. The absolutely horrifying, terrifying moment was when I realized that the pain from having pie stuck in my nasal passage was worse than anything I'd ever felt before (and now that I've had a kidney stone, I'd say the pain even rivals that).

I started crying. And then I started screaming. And then I didn't know what to do, so I was running around in circles in my little kitchen. Dan had no idea what to do, but he thought I was choking, so he kept giving me glass after glass of water. I was in so much pain that I couldn't articulate what was actually happening, so I just kept downing the water because I didn't know what else to do. It obviously didn't help. When I finally managed to tell him what was going on, he thought it was hysterical... but he ran out to my car and got my Neti pot for me. (You know... those squeezy bottles that you fill with water and a packet of saline mix to rinse out your sinuses). That did the trick right away, and let's just say that I FOR SURE had part of the graham cracker crust stuck in there.

It was IMMEDIATE relief from pain.

Yeah, that wasn't my most glamorous moment in front of Dan... but hey, he stuck around anyway.

These pictures are also from that visit with Dan. They show happier times... we obviously did NOT take any photos of "The Great Pumpkin Pie Incident of 2009".

So, have you gotten anything stuck in your nasal passage? I'll be honest: I've also had peppermint schnapps shoot through mine. Oops.

  1. Every time I get something stuck in my throat, I cough it back into the back of my nose. One time this happened with gummy bear, and I coughed it up into my nose, sorted it back down, choked on it, and this cycled happened five times. Awful.

  2. Oh my!! That sounds terrifying! I've honestly never had anything stuck in my nasal passage before... that's probably a good thing, because I am such a wimp when it comes to pain. I have a super low tolerance!

    1. It was so terrifying! It hurt a lot, and I have a high pain tolerance, so I'm sure it is one of the worst things that can happen. Telling the story now is hilarious, though!

  3. OMG! I can't imagine the pain!!! Icky! Are you able to eat pumpkin pie now? (I would not be able to even look at it without my sinuses aching!)
