2017 Christmas Card (and Past Years)

I'm a day (or three) late and a dollar short (what's new these days?), but I couldn't resist sharing our 2017 Christmas card... and while I was uploading it, I thought it would be fun to reminisce about the past few years, and I was right! I love putting together our card each year and sending them out to our family and friends!

I hope everyone had a very merry Christmas (or whatever holiday you celebrate!) Happy New Year! 2018 is just around the corner!

Three Years of Marriage

Three years of marriage. 8.5 years together. One sassy kid and another on the way. Travels. Cross country moves. Air Force life. Late nights. The good, the bad, and the everything in between. We've been through a lot in our time together, and I wouldn't want it any other way. The bad makes us appreciate the good all the more. The occasional distance makes us not take each other for granted when we're together. This life isn't the easiest, but it's special, crazy, and fun. It's unique and beautiful, and there's no one I'd rather co-pilot with. Happy third wedding anniversary to my handsome husband!

I accidentally called Dan my wife at the end of my vows (that I wrote) in front of all of our family and friends and had the moment epically captured via photographs AND video... see below! Ha!

We couldn't have done it without all of these amazing friends! I'm sad that the last time we were all in one place was at our wedding.

Forever thankful to have a husband who will dance in the rain with me!

Marriage is Hard Work, and that’s Why the ‘Love Your Spouse Challenge’ is a Good Thing

Marriage is hard work. Some days, it’s excruciatingly tough.

Then there are days where marriage is a piece of cake, and I wonder, “How did I get so lucky?”

But most of the time? Most of the time it’s tough. It’s waking up at different times and not communicating before the day begins. It’s him working a 12-hour day away from home at a dangerous job, while I try to fill time keeping the baby happy and healthy. It’s rushing to have dinner ready, so at the very least, we can have that time together at the table, talking and playing with the baby. It’s spending the evenings apart, despite being in the same home, while he studies for the next day and I clean up from dinner and get the baby to bed.

It’s sometimes, on the luckiest of nights, getting to settle down in the living room together and watch an episode of a mutually enjoyed show on Netflix, maybe even with popcorn, a bowl of ice cream, or a glass of wine. Those nights are the ones that keep everything rolling along.

Those nights provide just enough momentum to make it to the weekend, where things are much happier, more fun is had by all, and we get to spend time together and talk, hang out, go places, cook together, enjoy the outdoors (if you can even enjoy the crazy Texas heat – still working on figuring that one out), and many, many more happy photos are taken (and then shared on social media throughout the week, because let’s be real – no one wants to see eight photos from you in one day, no matter how cute your kid is. Guilty, party of one FOR SURE – sorry, guys.)

I’m sure you’ve seen the ‘Love Your Spouse Challenge’ rolling out on Facebook and other social media outlets. It’s where you’re challenged to share a photo of you and your spouse every day for seven days, spreading love to everyone who follows you – and then you tag two more people each day to keep the love going. Cheesy? Absolutely. But is it hurting anyone? You wouldn’t think so, but I have stumbled upon this article more than once between friends sharing it and seeing it posted in various groups I am in.

At first read, it makes so much sense. I’m sure we’ve all been there – struggling to realize that NO ONE is perfect and that what they share on social media is what they want everyone to THINK about them. I’m guilty. I share happy moments 95% of the time because those are the moments I WANT people to see. I’m a huge proponent of NEVER talking poorly about your spouse publicly – there is NO good that can come of it, so why bother? I do have two friends I confide in, and that is enough to help me keep my sanity when the going gets tough.

If we open our eyes to see that the perfection everyone else shares with their friends and the rest of the world isn’t perfection but simply the highlight reel of their lives, if you will, we would be much happier. In your head, you know your life isn’t perfect. You know you share the happiest of moments on social media. And you also know, deep down, that your friends don’t lead perfect lives either – even those people you keep on your friends list just to stalk, even though you haven’t talked to them in years. Even them.

Don’t compare your outtakes to another’s highlight reel. Isn’t that the truth? Some days, it’s tough not to, but take a step back and remember that the picture-perfect couple has issues too. I promise.

Everyone struggles. Being in a committed relationship is tough. There are small arguments, and there are major disagreements. Couples fight hard, day after day, to make things work and stay together, as they promised in their wedding vows.

And isn’t that what makes the ‘Love Your Spouse Challenge’ beautiful? Despite all the rough days, the arguments and disagreements, the feelings of loneliness and resentment, we still love our spouses enough to share their redeeming qualities with the rest of the world? Sometimes, it’s a reminder for ourselves at the same time. My spouse may not be perfect, but we love each other, and we made a promise to stick together through the good times AND the bad times, and even though he really irks me sometimes, he has a caring heart and has several good qualities.

Is that really so bad? With all of the hate-filled political posts on Facebook these days, seeing couples who love each other throughout the glorious mess that is marriage is a breath of fresh air, in my opinion.

After all, Teddy Roosevelt said it best: “comparison is the thief of joy”, so instead of focusing on everyone else’s seemingly perfect lives, focus instead of your own spouse and what you can do to make your marriage better.

Life should be about empowering everyone and being happy for each other. Life is not a competition, so just click ‘like’ on your friends’ posts and move on. Maybe by taking the time to focus on the positive qualities of their spouses that day, they have gained perspective on an issue within their marriage and have now committed to work on it. Be happy for them. Be happy with yourself and your own marriage. Just be happy, and love one another.

Celebrating Two Years of Marriage

Two whole years have flown by since the most magical day of my life. Sure, the day Annabelle was born can easily be deemed my "best day ever", but it certainly wasn't as pleasant as the day we proclaimed our love to each other with our own, unique vows (of which I totally messed up and   called Dan my wife instead of husband at the very end, prompting these epic photographs... first, Dan processed what I said... then, I gathered what I had done based on his face... oops! Sorry not sorry... that was typical Janelle, and our guests STILL bring that up all the time).

All joking aside, we had a fabulous day, despite the rain, because we were finally saying "I do" gathered by all of our family and closest friends, and it was just the most perfect day. And I promise I'm not laughing or looking horrified in every single wedding photo... here are my personal favorites from our big day!

Two years married have flown by. We have gone through a lot already, such as moving across the country twice and having a precious baby girl. It hasn't been all sunshine... marriage is a real trial. Living with someone else and staying in love is a very real struggle. We are both super stubborn, strong-willed people... so it's no wonder we argue when we both want our way. But I am so happy that our love for each other wins.

I am still so thankful to be Lieutenant Lovemuffin's co-pilot in this crazy life.

We took our annual photo holding last year's photo, where we were holding a wedding photo. How's that for complicated?! But I love it!

You can see our first anniversary photo in front of our last home in Ohio here... I like the tradition we've started with posing in front of our current home each year because we all know we'll live in so many different places over the years!

I can't wait to see what this next year brings!

Our First Anniversary Photo

I have been such a bad blogger lately. I am on NO schedule, which feels as awful as it sounds. Yes, I still have my calendar up-to-date with posts I WANT to be sharing... but this third trimester exhaustion sure is taking a toll on me.

By the time I finish my daily shop orders and chores, I just want to nap... so I do... because it's the only way I can function by the time Dan gets home from work.

Because of my crazy lack of updates, I never shared our first anniversary photo. I loved this idea when I saw it on Pinterest before we were even married, and I couldn't wait to do it! I've also seen many friends and bloggers use this idea... so it must be a really cool one.

We wanted our house to be in the background, so we tried our best. We actually got this photo on the very first try... by setting the timer on our camera and placing it on the bed of Dan's Dodge Ram. Next year, we'll have a different house in the background!

Do you do the anniversary picture-within-a-picture too?
Do you keep your anniversary photos displayed in your home?

Paper Anniversary - The Gifts

Dan and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary on Saturday.

We like the idea of traditional gifts... and the first year is paper. We were both stumped and perplexed for a little while... and then my creative side came out.

I ended up typing out our wedding vows to each other on Photoshop and printed them out in 5x7 size. I trimmed off the excess white border, and put them in opposite sides of a three window frame. For the middle window, I had to include a wedding photo, of course! I chose one of my favorites, made it black and white, printed it to 5x7, and trimmed the white border.

I made sure to print all three on cardstock to play it safe... that counts as paper, right?

Dan went with concert tickets for me. Tickets = paper... I'm convinced. We're going to see The Rolling Stones play in what is probably their last tour ever... at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City (where the Chiefs play)! This is seriously my dream concert in my dream venue. I'm a little nervous about being 29 weeks pregnant at the time, but... Baby Cookie will just end up loving classic rock 'n roll, right? It's the same day as our baby shower, so we'll be going after that, and I'm stoked! (He technically didn't buy the tickets yet because he's been monitoring them online at other locations, and the prices are dropping significantly shortly before the concerts... so we're going to do that!)

How did you celebrate your first anniversary?
What's your favorite anniversary gift yet?

How Has It Been a Year Already?! (Time Flies)

One year ago yesterday, Dan graduated from the United States Air Force Academy after five long years of hard work.

One year ago tomorrow, we got married in the Pike National Forest in front of our families and friends.

The past year has included the honeymoon of our dreams, a move across the country from Colorado to Ohio (boo), graduate school for Dan and working full-time on my Etsy shop for me, attending our first "real" (outside of USAFA) ball, getting pregnant with our first baby, and lots of traveling to see friends and family.

I don't know how it's possible that it's been 365 days since the biggest, happiest week of our lives... but somehow, it has. And let me tell you all - that wait was so worth it. The week we spent with graduation and wedding festivities was exhausting but the most rewarding experience ever. From watching Dan march in his final parade as a cadet to pinning on his 2 Lt. shoulder boards to watching him shake hands with and salute Joe Biden, Vice President of the United States, to signify his completion of the Academy... those are moments we'll never get back but ones that are so ingrained in my memory that I smile and feel emotional every time I think of them.

Walking down the aisle toward Dan two days later so we could declare our love for each other and finally make things official - that, my friends, was the biggest accomplishment. We had so much fun, and as an introspective person, I have had so much fun this week watching so many friends go through these same milestones.

Cheers to one year - and here's to many more to come!

Six Years Together

Six years ago tonight, Dan and I went on our first real date.

We had been friends for several months, and we hung out a lot... but our first DATE was on February 25th, 2009. He took me to get hibachi for dinner about 45 minutes away from our college campus, and then we went to a comedy show.

It was a blast, and we never looked back!

I can't believe we've been together for so long. And we're FINALLY MARRIED now! Nothing beats that - it's pretty awesome! AND we're expecting our first baby.

I can already tell this year is going to be an amazing one with such a wonderful man by my side.

How long have you been with your significant other?

2014: My Year in Review

2014 has been incredible. So many things happened this year - I got to play with lion cubs, Dan found out he's going to pilot training at ENJJPT, we spent 100's Weekend in Estes Park, I trained for and ran my first full marathon, had a bridal shower and bachelorette party, attended Dan's graduation parade, commissioning, and graduation, got married, spent a month in Europe for our honeymoon, said goodbye to Colorado and moved to Ohio, road lots of roller coasters at Cedar Point, watched the Kansas City Royals go to the World Series for the first time in my life, started volunteering with 7th and 8th graders at our new church's youth group, expanded my Etsy shop and sold many items at a craft fair, hosted Thanksgiving for the first time, and traveled back to Kansas City for the holidays.

2014 is definitely a year that I will remember forever! So many memories were made... and I absolutely cannot wait to see what 2015 has in store!
