Three Years of Marriage

Three years of marriage. 8.5 years together. One sassy kid and another on the way. Travels. Cross country moves. Air Force life. Late nights. The good, the bad, and the everything in between. We've been through a lot in our time together, and I wouldn't want it any other way. The bad makes us appreciate the good all the more. The occasional distance makes us not take each other for granted when we're together. This life isn't the easiest, but it's special, crazy, and fun. It's unique and beautiful, and there's no one I'd rather co-pilot with. Happy third wedding anniversary to my handsome husband!

I accidentally called Dan my wife at the end of my vows (that I wrote) in front of all of our family and friends and had the moment epically captured via photographs AND video... see below! Ha!

We couldn't have done it without all of these amazing friends! I'm sad that the last time we were all in one place was at our wedding.

Forever thankful to have a husband who will dance in the rain with me!

Marriage is Hard Work, and that’s Why the ‘Love Your Spouse Challenge’ is a Good Thing

Marriage is hard work. Some days, it’s excruciatingly tough.

Then there are days where marriage is a piece of cake, and I wonder, “How did I get so lucky?”

But most of the time? Most of the time it’s tough. It’s waking up at different times and not communicating before the day begins. It’s him working a 12-hour day away from home at a dangerous job, while I try to fill time keeping the baby happy and healthy. It’s rushing to have dinner ready, so at the very least, we can have that time together at the table, talking and playing with the baby. It’s spending the evenings apart, despite being in the same home, while he studies for the next day and I clean up from dinner and get the baby to bed.

It’s sometimes, on the luckiest of nights, getting to settle down in the living room together and watch an episode of a mutually enjoyed show on Netflix, maybe even with popcorn, a bowl of ice cream, or a glass of wine. Those nights are the ones that keep everything rolling along.

Those nights provide just enough momentum to make it to the weekend, where things are much happier, more fun is had by all, and we get to spend time together and talk, hang out, go places, cook together, enjoy the outdoors (if you can even enjoy the crazy Texas heat – still working on figuring that one out), and many, many more happy photos are taken (and then shared on social media throughout the week, because let’s be real – no one wants to see eight photos from you in one day, no matter how cute your kid is. Guilty, party of one FOR SURE – sorry, guys.)

I’m sure you’ve seen the ‘Love Your Spouse Challenge’ rolling out on Facebook and other social media outlets. It’s where you’re challenged to share a photo of you and your spouse every day for seven days, spreading love to everyone who follows you – and then you tag two more people each day to keep the love going. Cheesy? Absolutely. But is it hurting anyone? You wouldn’t think so, but I have stumbled upon this article more than once between friends sharing it and seeing it posted in various groups I am in.

At first read, it makes so much sense. I’m sure we’ve all been there – struggling to realize that NO ONE is perfect and that what they share on social media is what they want everyone to THINK about them. I’m guilty. I share happy moments 95% of the time because those are the moments I WANT people to see. I’m a huge proponent of NEVER talking poorly about your spouse publicly – there is NO good that can come of it, so why bother? I do have two friends I confide in, and that is enough to help me keep my sanity when the going gets tough.

If we open our eyes to see that the perfection everyone else shares with their friends and the rest of the world isn’t perfection but simply the highlight reel of their lives, if you will, we would be much happier. In your head, you know your life isn’t perfect. You know you share the happiest of moments on social media. And you also know, deep down, that your friends don’t lead perfect lives either – even those people you keep on your friends list just to stalk, even though you haven’t talked to them in years. Even them.

Don’t compare your outtakes to another’s highlight reel. Isn’t that the truth? Some days, it’s tough not to, but take a step back and remember that the picture-perfect couple has issues too. I promise.

Everyone struggles. Being in a committed relationship is tough. There are small arguments, and there are major disagreements. Couples fight hard, day after day, to make things work and stay together, as they promised in their wedding vows.

And isn’t that what makes the ‘Love Your Spouse Challenge’ beautiful? Despite all the rough days, the arguments and disagreements, the feelings of loneliness and resentment, we still love our spouses enough to share their redeeming qualities with the rest of the world? Sometimes, it’s a reminder for ourselves at the same time. My spouse may not be perfect, but we love each other, and we made a promise to stick together through the good times AND the bad times, and even though he really irks me sometimes, he has a caring heart and has several good qualities.

Is that really so bad? With all of the hate-filled political posts on Facebook these days, seeing couples who love each other throughout the glorious mess that is marriage is a breath of fresh air, in my opinion.

After all, Teddy Roosevelt said it best: “comparison is the thief of joy”, so instead of focusing on everyone else’s seemingly perfect lives, focus instead of your own spouse and what you can do to make your marriage better.

Life should be about empowering everyone and being happy for each other. Life is not a competition, so just click ‘like’ on your friends’ posts and move on. Maybe by taking the time to focus on the positive qualities of their spouses that day, they have gained perspective on an issue within their marriage and have now committed to work on it. Be happy for them. Be happy with yourself and your own marriage. Just be happy, and love one another.

Six Years Together

Six years ago tonight, Dan and I went on our first real date.

We had been friends for several months, and we hung out a lot... but our first DATE was on February 25th, 2009. He took me to get hibachi for dinner about 45 minutes away from our college campus, and then we went to a comedy show.

It was a blast, and we never looked back!

I can't believe we've been together for so long. And we're FINALLY MARRIED now! Nothing beats that - it's pretty awesome! AND we're expecting our first baby.

I can already tell this year is going to be an amazing one with such a wonderful man by my side.

How long have you been with your significant other?

The 12 Days of Christmas: Spouse Edition

If you follow me on Instagram, this won't be news to you... but for the 12 days leading up to Christmas, I surprised my handsome husband with one gift each day that corresponded with the number for that day. Well, every day matched the number except day one. I think I'd be a pretty terrible wife if I made an entire batch of delicious cookies and only gave him one.

Each day when he came home from classes, I gave him that day's gift. He loved it, and I felt like a rockstar wife having something for him each of those days. I highly recommend doing this (or something similar - there are 14 days of Valentines as well that people do in February) because it was a lot of fun for both of us!

Here's what I did for each day... but they can easily be changed up to match what your husband loves! You don't HAVE to coordinate the gift with the day number, either - I just did that because I'm like that.

Day 1 - red velvet cookies

Day 2 - a "pair" of running socks

Day 3 - three new books

Day 4 - four specialty coffees

Day 5 - one journal and four pens

Day 6 - a six-pack of beer

Day 7 - a movie, popcorn, three candies, and two sodas

Day 8 - eight magnets that symbolize his time at USAFA

Day 9 - a collage of the nine cities we honeymooned in

Day 10 - a $10 gift card for when he forgets his lunch

Day 11 - eleven 'open when' letters

Day 12 - twelve local restaurants to try in 2015

And these are the tags I made to put on each gift. Aren't they cute? I've included a link to download them in a PDF file at the end of this post!

To download the 12 Days of Christmas printable tags in full size, CLICK HERE to open a PDF - I recommend printing them on cardstock so they are sturdy enough to attach to your packages!

  • Have you ever done the 12 Days of Christmas?
  • Do you have any suggestions for each of the numbered days?

All About the Mr. & Mrs. {Blogtember Challenge}

September 13th Prompt: Your current relationship status. If dating/married, give us a glimpse of your story! If single, share that special season.

This prompt is fun because I LOVE talking about my husband. And that word (husband) is still pretty new!

We met in our co-ed fraternity in college, Phi Sigma Pi. We got to know each other for about six months as friends. And then we started dating in February of 2009. He took me on a date for hibachi and a comedy show. We had a BLAST together and began our relationship.

Fast forward a little bit: Dan gets accepted into the United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School. (He was already in the Air Guard). He leaves for Colorado, and I finish the last year of my degree in Missouri.

I move to Colorado after graduation, and Dan begins his four years at the Academy AFTER his prep school year. We are not allowed to live together (as he has to live on base), and we are NOT allowed to be married. Such is life. We enjoy our time in Colorado anyway!

In July of 2011, on Dan's summer leave period, we took a road trip through the southwest portion of the USA. He proposed to me in a surprise hot air balloon flight over Albuquerque. It was the best moment yet.

We dealt with a lot of crap from the Academy... but we made it to the 2% Club! (Supposedly, only 2% of couples who enter the Academy make it through to the end... and YAY, we made it!)

He graduated on May 28th of this year. We got married two days later, and it was bliss. THAT was the best day ever.

We went on a European adventure for our honeymoon, and we are now living together (finally - after 5.5 long years!) at our first base in Ohio, while Dan gets his Master's degree before pilot training.

I'd say I hit the jackpot. ;-)

All photos are taken from graduation / wedding week at the end of May! What a whirlwind of a week that was - but oh, how amazing it was!

10 Things I Love... About Myself {Blogtember Challenge}

September 10th Prompt: List 10 things that you love about yourself! Let's kick that negative self-talk outta here!

I love making lists. But it's awkward talking/writing about yourself sometimes... so I'll try my best!

1. I love that I care so much about other people.

2. I love that I am not a procrastinator.

3. I love the way I write (fiction, not necessarily on here).

4. I love how much thought I put into creating special gifts for people.

5. I love my gift for creating things.

6. I love that once I put my mind to something, I follow through with it.

7. I love that I always try to find the best in people.

8. I love my sense of humor and how I find a lot of things funny that others wouldn't.

9. I love my green eyes. Yes, there's a superficial one... but I do, okay?!

10. I love how excited I get about all of the little things in life!

What do YOU love most about YOURSELF?

Love: Five Year Edition

Today marks FIVE YEARS with my wonderful, handsome fiancé, Cadet Lovemuffin.

We've had five years of amazing memories, and I can't wait to make even more with him.

This is our year. FINALLY, it is our year. In just over three months, we will finally be married and going on our six week honeymoon!

Because of our anniversary, I wanted to share five things I love about Dan, one for each year we've been together:

1. He is determined, driven, and hard-working. He takes everything in his life seriously, and he always gives his 100%.

2. He is creative and fun. Seriously, he plans the best dates for us and is excellent at surprising me with fun new activities. (I mean, he proposed to me during a surprise hot air balloon flight. He's got it.)

3. He is willing to do almost anything. See the picture above? That's right - he wasn't even ashamed to help paint those signs and hold them proudly while we took engagement photos.

4. He is a leader. Really, he is a very charismatic person in general, but he's one of those people that you just look up to naturally. He makes wise choices, and I couldn't think of a better person to build a life with.

5. He is my best friend. We can talk for 10+ hours on a road trip and not run out of things to say. We can also sit in the same room and not say a word but still feel together. I love that about our relationship, and I will forever call him my best friend.

  • How long have you been with your significant other?
  • What do you do to celebrate your anniversary?
  • What do you love most about him/her?

A Public Love Letter {Blogtember Challenge}

Monday, September 16th Prompt: Write a public love letter to someone in your life.

This prompt actually said I could write a love letter to anyone and that it didn't have to be romantic. That's cool and all, but I don't write love letters that are NOT romantic... so naturally I'm writing to my handsome fiancé, the love of my life, my Cadet Lovemuffin... otherwise known as Dan.

Dear Danny,

Can you even believe how far we've come? We've been together for over four and a half years now, and that's just the beginning.

We have traveled alone to see each other, and we have traveled together to see new places.

We have become friends with each others' friends, and we have made new friends together.

We are always looking for new journeys, new adventures, and new things to try.

In just eight months, you'll (finally) be graduating from the Air Force Academy, and I will be your WIFE! We've been waiting what feels like FOREVER for that to happen, and we're finally approaching the "light at the end of the tunnel" that everyone talks about.

We have grown so much as a couple over the last few years, and I am so happy with where we are. We are more than ready for the next step, and I can't wait for May 30th, 2014 to get here.

I am so excited to find out where we'll be moving together after our wedding. It's been such a long road, but every single second will be worth it when we're living together like normal couples.

I'm here for you through everything, and I'm so thankful to be your fiancée.

Love,
Janelle

P.S. Thank you for always helping me clean. You're the best. I couldn't ask for more.

It's so easy writing to him. Who is the easiest person for YOU to write to?

Engaged!

Okay, so my title may be a little misleading for this post. I didn't JUST get engaged. Today is the ANNIVERSARY of my engagement to Dan, though... today marks TWO YEARS since he popped the question, and I said, "OF COURSE!"

If you'd like to read about our story, CLICK HERE (to go to my "about" page), and scroll down to "Our Engagement Story".

If you already have, just check out these pictures from our special day, July 7th, 2011!

I really am so blessed to have a fiancé who thought so hard about how he was going to propose. He is so creative and loves surprising me, and I will be forever thankful that he made the moment SO special for me! :)

He got me the PERFECT ring! I wanted something like this (and he knew that but wanted to pick it out himself) -- I'd say he did a VERY good job! :)

I love the detail from the side view. I had never seen anything like it, and I LOVE that my ring is unique! :)

I absolutely LOVE sharing our story, and since I'm missing my Cadet Lovemuffin right now, it's great to reminisce! I will be seeing him soon, though, and I am STOKED about that!
